Elven Eyes part 2
On the drive back Terrance was having trouble remembering everything that happened that night but wasn't having any trouble feeling the effects. He was covered in bruises and scrapes; his muscles burned more than they had ever burned and he couldn't get the taste of blood out of his mouth. Even though his lip was split, Terrance was positive that the blood wasn't his. The leather seats were still cold against his back but the woman hadn't turned on the heat as they drove. The sound of tires driving along a wet road was the only noise he heard as they slid through the empty streets. He looked over at the woman driving him back to his apartment and realized suddenly that this was the first time he had been with a beautiful woman in the last five years when he wasn't working. Probably the first time a woman actually knew his name in longer. Whatever was happening to him, Terrance couldn't say that things were all bad.
"Are you ok?"
Terrance flinched from the sudden break in thought. "Yeah, I'm just fine. Just thinking."
"What you did was amazingly brave, and stupid as well. They could have killed you."
Terrance instinctively raised his hand to straighten his glasses, he realized that he wasn't wearing any glasses and that his hands were covered in blood. This is an important moment because this is when Terrance realized that he wasn't having a dream. He had been going through the unfamiliar motions with the nervous confidence of someone waiting to wake up. He was waiting for the rabbit hole to fade around him and to be replaced by his warm bed. Suddenly the weight fell on his chest like the Cheshire Cat, it's wicked grin impossibly wide. He found strangely enough that he was also smiling. It was this moment that he felt the creature inside of his head coil around his mind. Instead of forcing it's way into control once again it simply rested and instead of trying to force it out, Terrance accepted it.
"I just wasn't thinking."
His senses exploded in brilliant hues as the world suddenly opened up to him. He felt the road sliding by underneath, the vibrations from the engine block, and the cold air playfully running along his skin. He heard breath leave her lips and fill her lungs again. Her heart was still beating quickly from the excitement. The smell of Maria's perfume overwhelmed him where he hadn't noticed she was wearing any before. The perfume mixed with the smell of oil, carbon dioxide, sweat, adrenaline, blood, leather, and the tuna casserole Maria had for lunch. He felt every inch of the beautiful woman sitting next to him. The reptilian thing inside of him purred.
"... come along I don't know what I would have done. Is there anything I can do to repay you?" Maria had been talking.
"This is fine."
"What?"
"You can let me off here."
"But, this isn't were you said..."
Maria stopped the car and he closed the door behind him without looking back. He didn't think about the woman who would have captivated him yesterday. Who he treasured every moment with five minutes ago. He didn't think about then and everything that was a memory became momentarily unimportant. There was a brand new night ahead of him and he didn't want to miss it. The fire around his mind spread through his limbs birthing him in it's image. He flinched as the dark street filled with light and he smiled impossibly wide.
